The rates of overweight and obese Americans have steadily increased over the years. With the condition of being overweight or obese, a person is much more likely to experience a range of different health concerns. Even being minimally overweight can have a dramatic effect on a person’s cardiovascular health, joint health and it can even increase the risk of certain types of cancers.

Being overweight or obese will dramatically increase the risk of type 2 diabetes. In most cases, this type of diabetes does not begin until a person reaches adulthood, but we are seeing an increasing trend of type 2 diabetes affecting younger people.

Overweight and obesity will increase a person’s risk for heart disease. Common heart problems for people that are overweight include the hardening or narrowing of arteries. This can affect the blood supply to the heart, and it can increase the risk for things like heart attack and angina.

High Blood Pressure

With more fat tissue on the body, the heart needs to work harder to pump blood to the larger body of a person that is obese. This increases the blood pressure in arteries, and it increases the risk of things like heart attack and stroke.

Obesity is considered the most significant risk factor for sleep apnea. This condition causes breathing difficulty during sleep. Sleep apnea occurs because an overweight individual may have more fat stored around the neck or chest. This additional weight can restrict the airway or put pressure on the lungs, and it causes pauses and interruptions to breathing when the person is asleep. Sleep apnea can lead to problems with sleep loss that will make a person feel tired during the day, and it can also increase the risk of heart failure.


Being overweight or obese can increase the risk for several different types of cancers. It can increase the risk of cancer for the prostate, colon, breasts, kidneys, gall bladder, uterus and more.

If a person is overweight or obese, it can impact their quality of life and it can also lead to a variety of conditions that could shorten their life expectancy. Fortunately, losing weight can help a person to reduce the risk of many of these conditions, and if they already have a health problem associated with being overweight, taking measures to lose weight can help to mitigate the effects.
